Getting acquainted with Comte de Lautréamont’s Les chants de Maldoror and Lewis Carroll’s Alice in Wonderland proved to be determinant for the character of the paintings that I have been making since 1968. Four periods can be distinguished, periods in which several series appear on the stage of the imagination at regular intervals. Following a long stay in New York in the previous summer, I create Wah-Wah in 1971, a series of eleven drawings in which a masked baboon crawls through the mirror and eventually meets his better half after many rambles.
In November 1972 I complete De drie Marguerites, the first introduction to a paradoxical and poetic world of delusion that is influenced by literature above all things. Alice is to dominate my work for ten years. During this period she increasingly represents my alter ego that is trying to put would-be reality in perspective in a bright, classical composition of surrealist settings.
In the mid-nineties Alice returns in the paintings. She is now accompanied by Pinocchio, the representative of the lie, and in the Neverland of painting she meets Peter Pan, the perpetual shadowless youth. An unmistakable danger is lurking in the bushes of the lost children’s paradise. In 1999 Desolation Row arises, taking stock of imaginary creatures living in the domain of mild madness. Between 2009 and 2011 I work on the series of 12 paintings Alice (high, low and in between), a search through the history of art interwoven with illustrations by John Tenniel, the first illustrator of Alice in Wonderland.
In the summer of 2011 I embark on a new period and make an initial reconnaissance for the new series The broken promised land, a series in which at present some thirty paintings have been completed. The garden that joins my French summer-residence and the river Vienne is my preferred point of departure to accommodate my heroes and demons justifiably. Surrounded by the brilliant sunlight and free nature’s botanic rampancy they play their roles in the imaginary circus of the mind.

Description:
‘’My name is 1.6 and I am questioning my existence. What does my humanity mean in a world full of manipulation and manufacturability? I am stuck in pixels. My digital presence defines my identity. But how can something so elusive be so valuable? Am I still in control of my own decisions? My digital world revolves around me. It’s always up to date of my desires. I wonder if an offline life would make me less human, because everyone else I know is living on the internet too.’’

Title: 3x The night is darkest just before the dawn I
Year: 2021

Description:
History likes to repeat itself. Our age is one of self-indulgence and it has a lot of parralels with the 17th centruy and late 19th century. Globalisation and the technologic revolution have generated unprecedented opportunities, both good and bad. Vanity is no longer immoral or perverse instead it is considered a virtue to be rewarded with likes. Each artwork is an provocative and ironic take on the classical vanitas paintings. By using contemporary objects as symbols to convey my message I try to gap the bridge between present and past. The contemporary objects and classical settings clash but in a awkward way they seem very familiar to each other. In a way the whole serie is a cheeky look on our ‘License to Sin’.

Description: The acanthus leaf, that to this day decorates the facades of prestigious historical buildings, is possibly the most iconic element in western ornamental tradition. The depth of its original meaning is lost in the mists of time, though it seems most likely to connected with feminine, positive transition towards the afterlife. The vestiges of its symbology where collected into the myth surrounding the inspiration for the design of Corinthian capital. According to the roman writer (architect and engineer) Vitruvius, its invention was due to Callimachus, greek architect and sculptor (5th century BCE), who was inspired by the sight of a votive basked that had been left on a young girl’s grave, and around which lush acanthus leaves had grown. This is my tribute to that myth shrouded symbol that has accompanied western civilisation for over two and a half millennia.

History is the inspiration for my relationship with art, art as a tool, as a means to an end. And the end is to get to hear what history has to say, about itself, about its lost protagonists, about us. History, the development of its tradition, its expressive nameless individuals, its interaction with other cultures, with existence, they all are part of my research, from a macroscopic traditional perspective to the soul of individuals darting out of its flow. Looking at cultures looking at each other, at the beyond, I’m interested in what that is to us, and what reveals of me, of us, now.

Title: Amapola “Maryse Condé”
Year: 2020
Description:
“You don’t have to tell the truth. Never. Never. Not to loved ones. They must always be treated with the brightest colors. Take them out favored. Make them believe what they are not.”
Heart that laughs, heart that cries Maryse Condé
This collection of red poppies is dedicated to female writers and fictional characters.
The poppy is a wild and delicate flower. It has long been used as a symbol of peace, sleep and death. It is a special flower. It does not allow to be cut, it decomposes and undoes quickly. The brilliant color and vibration that it presents in the field does not last even a few minutes in our hands. If we want to preserve it, ensure that it remains, it will be necessary to elaborate it, work it in such a way that it does not spoil. The resulting imperfect nature will be much completer and more elegant… and it will remain.
The poppy, seen in this way, is a beautiful metaphor of love and of all those things that we need to take care of so that they do not spoil and we do not lose them…
Love and beauty are the two fundamental challenges of human being and it takes a lifetime to understand them.
Beauty repairs
Artist:
Beauty repairs.
It is the central idea in the development of my work as a visual artist and architect.
As a visual artist I work on multidisciplinary projects through painting, sculpture, photography and video.
Sardinas (2011) is a reflection on collective intelligences and the perception of value of the individual in front of the collective. Cuentos (2011) addresses through photography the complexity of the narrative structures of simple stories. Seascapes (2016) is a reflection on color, light, matter, space and time. Since 2017, Nightscapes has explored the latent emotion in one of the most moving experiences of human existence, “the dark night of the soul”. Amapolas (2017) is a project focused on love and beauty as the fundamental challenges of human beings, which takes a lifetime to understand. Waldweben (2018) tries to catch the moment in which we connect with the sublime from the beautiful (nature) (Siegfried, Wagner).
As an architect I have developed my professional career at Richard Rogers Partnership (London) and in my own studio. My work has been awarded and recognized internationally, being selected to represent Spain in the Green Building Challenge (Tokyo 2005) among others.
I have been a professor (Antonio de Nebrija University and La Salle University) and researcher (FAME Project 2011, Government of Spain).

Statement
My practice explores the interstice and interplay of fact and fiction through the fusion of analogue and digital mediums and methods of creation. One of the results of this exploration is a diverse series works variously titled; Phylum, Dark Matter, and Folksonomy. The works begin as small hand-made wax sculptures that are scanned using a variety of input methods including computerized axial tomography (CAT) scanners, triangulation laser scanners and CMOS camera sensors. They are altered with computer software and output using a mix of traditional and contemporary methods of print production, including inkjet prints, Rapid Prototype 3D Prints and laser engraved woodblock prints.
These Biofictions are inspired by the natural world and owe part of their final structure to principles articulated by the scientific world namely, symmetry, subunit structure and proportionate scale. I extrapolate on these facts, fact based theories and notions, and reach beyond what can be measured and described to materialize the unknown improbable fantastical side of life…as only art can.
